In the work complex "Trauma" (2016), Joan Fontcuberta starts from the hypothesis that images go through an organic metabolism: they are born, they grow, they multiply and die in order to restart the cycle of life. For this reason Fontcuberta is interested in photographic archives, as they also contain "sick" and "torturous" - destroyed - images. Images that, as a consequence of the transformative biology of time and chemistry, suffer from a kind of disorder that disrupts their documentary function and prevents them from "living on" in the archive. In the representation of this trauma, however, a new image manifests itself at the same time, which, in dissolution, merges into an independently poetic work.
Joan Fontcuberta (*1955 in Barcelona / Spain) lives and works in Barcelona. In 1977 he completed his studies in Communication at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Since 1993 he has been professor of communication sciences at the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona.
The Spanish artist Joan Fontcuberta negotiates in his artistic and theoretical work great themes of humanity. In his works he creates a visual universe in which truth and fiction are closely interwoven. Fontcuberta reflects on the evidential power attributed to photography and, with a sense of humour and sharp wit, takes this promise to absurdity. In doing so, he refers to the use of photography in applied fields such as science, politics or religion from within his artistic work.
Joan Fontcuberta is an invited Artist Meets Archive artist at the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
