Characteristic of Cologne as a photographic location are to a large extent the numerous and high-quality photographic collections and archives. Together with five institutes, the Photoszene invites internationally active artists to work on the archives and treasures during the coming festival in May 2020 in order to develop an exhibition for the festival in May 2021 based on their research.
In this second round, too, the aim is to understand the massive way in which photography is used, processed, archived and catalogued in the various fields in order to make a history provable for future generations. It is about specific questions for the archive as an organizing and structuring institute: about how archives remain readable in the digital age or what is not visible in these archives. The project spans the specific focal points of archives in the disciplines of colonial, reproduction, dance, economic and scientific history and questions the significance of the medium of photography in these.
From the archival shelves to the stars and back! We are very much looking forward to working with the following five interesting archives and equally exciting artists!
