Beyond III – [post]colonial Present
Magazine for Photography / Exhibition / International Artist ExchangeHow do contemporary photographers from Africa and Europe, who share the common history of colonialism, approach their very different perspectives on the matter? Are there images of the Other that dominate the visual landscape? And what can we learn from each other?
Western capitalism and globalisation are closely linked to the history of colonialism. It has led to hierarchies and relationships still palpable in the post-colonial present; these structures are reproduced on a daily basis, particularly through images.
Beyond III aims to open a discourse on colonial structures in photography, the power of images in our time and the conditions of image production in a globalised world. For the third issue, we have invited ten young photographers from Africa and Western Europe to present their work and exchange their ideas. In addition to the magazine, we planned an international artist exchange and exhibition. This would have created a forum for dialogue between the artists and the public. Due to the global pandemic we have postponed these events and will take them up at a later point. The print magazine Beyond III is a theoretical basis and offers a starting point for further discussions. In addition to the artistic work of the participants, the magazine publishes two texts by Fiston Mwanza Mujila (Congolese writer) and Mark Sealy (British curator and cultural historian).
In 2016, Beyond was initiated as a photography magazine in newspaper format in order to start a dialogue between photographers and their peers which might extend to the broader community. The third edition of the magazine uses the language of art to open a space in which photographers from different regions of the world meet, exchange ideas, learn from one another and create new images beyond clichéd and stereotypical perspectives.
The project was conceived and realized by Juliane Herrmann (initiator of Beyond and freelance photographer, Cologne) and Marie Köhler (photographer and media artist, Cologne) in cooperation with the Internationale Photoszene Köln, Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum - Cultures of the World and AfricologneFESTIVAL.
